Literature Text

She was old.
She could hardly walk,
Or talk.

She looked
So peaceful, and comfortable.

She suffered,
Her limbs hurt.
Nearly blind,
Fully deaf.

The world around her
Kept changing
But she was old.
And It didn't matter.

Her body,
Fragile.
Movement hurt.
Living hurt.

She gave many years.
She lived very long.
She was there for us to care for.
She was there to care for us.

She was lively,
Like a ribbon.
She ate happily,
When all she'd get were scraps.

She'd live proudly
Knowing
Those are years
She'd never get back.

She was with us when
Grandpa died.
She was with us
When grandma died.

And she knew.
She felt
Her bones deteriorating.

She saw
Hey eyesight worsening.
She heard
The difference
When she couldn't hear any more.

And still,
She was glad.
Because we were glad.
Still,
She lived on for us.

Last night,
She simply couldn't carry the burden any longer.
Last night,
She felt herself leaving us.
Last night,
As her eyes closed for the last time
She didn't bother to say goodbye.

Because she knew.
Because she understood
That we appreciate her.
She understood,
The love we had for her.

She could comprehend
The need we had for her,
But she was old.
And so, It didn't matter.
For Lisa.
Your little dog face kept me happy through my childhood.
I'd remember your bark. Like a little yap.
And I'd smile.

So familiar.
Like an icon now, your small body. Born and bred here. So smart.

Thank you, Lisa.
You gave us the best years of your life, when we only gave you the worst of ours.
You've seen as much death as the rest of us.
Now carry on, and deal with your own.

We'll mourn.
